Hyperpigmentation is when the skin develops darker patches, such as with age spots. This condition is often found to be harmless but that causes discomfort of cosmetic nature. Exposure to the sun, trauma or injury to the skin and hormonal changes are the most likely reasons for developing discoloration to the skin, usually causing small patches of darker skin on various parts of the face or body. Older people are most often affected by pigmentation issues which gives the perception that this condition is an age related concern. This is not always the case but is simply that it develops over time. Areas where pigmentation is most likely to be seen includes: the face, shoulders, neck and hands.
Lumecca is a very powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) that treats pigmented and vascular lesions. After just one use, you will notice significant improvement in the complexion and clarity of your skin. Lumecca operates using photothermolysis, which delivers a comfortable and effective light treatment.
We will pass the Lumecca handheld device over your skin, which applies wavelengths of IPL into the deeper layers of your skin. When the pigmented cells absorb the light, they are destroyed and broken into tiny particles, which the body can flush away naturally.
The skin will continue to look younger and more brilliant over time with most visible results after 1-2 weeks. Having multiple photofacial sessions will improve the final result. For vascular treatments such as spider or leg veins, results can be seen in up to 2 weeks.
Avoid any tanning for 3-4 weeks prior to treatment AND use SPF 30+ sunscreen. It is extremely important to wear sunscreen daily and avoid intentional sun exposure to prevent adverse reactions to your treatment such as burns, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
Do not use any retinoids, tretinoins, alpha or beta hydroxy products, vitamin C products, scrub, exfoliate, or have chemical peels performed on the treated areas for one week. Makeup can be applied immediately if the skin is not broken. We recommend mineral based makeup.
Lumecca IPL treatment is ideal for patients who have moderate-to-severe scars, acne, rosacea, skin discoloration, spider veins, stretch marks, birthmarks, freckles, wrinkles, and blood vessels that they would like treated.
Although IPL is noninvasive and considered relatively safe, the following patients should not consider intense pulsed light: Patients with tanned skin. Patients currently taking Accutane or a similar acne treatment.
